Hankins picks the Hawkeyes

Three-star cornerback Matt Hankins has made his college decision. After returning home from his visit to the University of Iowa over the weekend, the 6-foot-1, 160-pound Texas native verbally committed to the Iowa Hawkeyes today.

“I picked them because out of my top four that I visited, I felt most comfortable with Iowa,” said Hankins. “The players and coaches were great and I got along with them all.”

Hankins had previously narrowed his options down to Iowa, Texas Tech, Duke, and Houston among his list of 20 scholarship offers. In Iowa though, he feels he has found a home for college and one that fits him well.

“I like how it's a college town and the fans are amazing,” Hankins said. “What made me comfortable was talking to the players and them telling me the inside scoop. Also, just having some of my boys committing helps too.”

Overall, Hankins is commitment No. 14 for the Hawkeyes in the Class on 2017 and the 4th from the state of Texas as he joins Eno Benjamin, Peyton Mansell, and Gavin Holmes. The Iowa coaches are also still after cornerback Kobe Boyce, who visited with Hankins this past weekend, and wide receiver Camron Buckley, as they try to keep the pipeline going from the Dallas area.

“It's very exciting,” said Hankins. “We all know each other really well and we’re making it a Texas movement.”

In committing to Iowa, Hankins chose the Hawkeyes over scholarship offers from Texas Tech, Duke, Houston, Colorado, Missouri, Illinois, Kansas, Southern Miss, SMU, Tulane, Fresno State, Connecticut, Nevada, New Mexico, Utah State, Colorado State, Toledo, Bowling Green, Louisiana-Monroe, UTSA, and North Texas.

As a junior, Hankins finished with 50 tackles, 13 pass deflections, and 2 interceptions at Marcus High School in Flower Mound, TX.
